1978

In Florida, 12-year-old Carol Sullivan was abducted from a school bus stop in Volusia County. Her skull was later found inside a bucket, leading authorities to presume she had been murdered and decapitated.

Sullivan was a suspected victim of serial killer; Charles Brandt who was linked to 26 murders in Florida between 1971 and 2004.

1979

In St. Louis County, Minnesota, 29-year-old Alan Leroy Carl vanished without a trace. He had last been seen in the city of Duluth by friends before his disappearance.

Carl was known to suffer from alcoholism, and it is suspected that he may have been a victim of foul play. No trace of Carl has ever been found.

1980

In Markina-Xemein, Spain, on September 20th, a mass shooting at a bar carried out by the Basque separatist organisation ETA killed four civil guards. The shootings were the first ETA attack since the Spanish Government remained in power after a vote of confidence.

It was also the second attack by the ETA on guards who were protecting weapons caches. Seven months earlier, the ETA had killed six civil guards who had been protecting weapons in transit.

In 1984, Jaime Rementería Beotegui was found guilty of participation in the bar shooting and sentenced to life in prison. He was released in 2004.

In 2003, another suspect, Jose Ramón Foruria Zubialdea, who had fled to Venezuela after the attack, was extradited back to Spain where he was sentenced to 40 years in prison. He was released in 2011 on grounds of ill health.

1981

In Lake County, California, 52-year-old Stella Vera Gies disappeared under suspicious circumstances. She was a diabetic who was last seen in Lakeport and was also known as Stella Vera Trujillo

She left her personal belongings behind and has never been seen again. Her case remains unsolved and she is considered endangered missing.

1982

In Rostov Oblast, Soviet Union, the mutilated remains of 19-year-old Irina Karabelnikova were discovered in a forest near a railroad track. She had disappeared almost two weeks earlier after a row with her parents.

She had been lured away from her local train station and brutally murdered by Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, AKA: The Red Ripper. Chikatilo was captured in 1990 and found guilty of 52 murders despite confessing to 56.

1983

In Broward, Florida, the skeletal remains of a teenage white girl were found on the side of Route 27, just eight miles north of State Road 84. She had been discovered by walkers in the area. The skeleton was complete but had no recognisable features.

Over the years, many reconstructions have taken place to discover her identity but they have not been successful. The circumstances of her death remain a mystery.
