23-year-old student Elizabeth Andes was found dead in her college apartment in Oxford, Ohio. Andes had been tied up, strangled and stabbed to death.
Her boyfriend was a suspect but his confession was said to have been flawed and so he was released shortly after. As of 2020, her murder remains unsolved.
In Volusia County, Florida, Kenneth Darcell Quince raped and strangled to death 82-year-old Ms. Bowdoin. Quince had entered Bowdoin’s home with the intention of robbing it when he encountered Bowdoin in her nightdress.
A struggle ensued in which Quince ended up sexually attacking and then killing Bowdoin. Bowdoin’s body was found on December 30th after family had not heard from her. Quince was arrested shortly after and charged with murder. On October 21st 1980, he was sentenced to death.
In Santiago, Chile, an armed gunman with affiliations to the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR), shot dead a right-wing youth at his home in a slum neighbourhood of the city.
The unnamed victim had previously spoken out against the MIR and had been on their hit list for a while. The MIR were a Chilean far-left political group and former urban guerrilla organisation who were advocates for Communism and Guevarism.
Although they claimed responsibility for the assassination, no suspect was ever brought to justice.
In Pacifica, California, Jay and Ruth Hunter were shot dead in the bedroom of their home. They had been killed in a pre-meditated attack by Jay’s son, Michael Wayne Hunter.
Michael had been planning the attack for at least a month when he had purchased a shotgun with the sole intention of killing his father and stepmother. He was doing so out of revenge for not receiving his fair share of an inheritance from his late mother’s estate.
Michael’s biological mother had divorced from Jay in 1973 and died from cancer in 1979. Just before their deaths, Jay had instructed his attorney to remove Michael from any and all inheritance on his will.
Michael was caught a month later, attempting to flee to Mexico. He was sentenced to death in 1984 which was later commuted to life in 2002.
Rounding off a year of murder, Gary Ridgway, AKA: The Green River Killer, claimed his last victim of 1982. 15-year-old Colleen Renee Brockman was lured away from downtown Seattle, before being raped and murdered by Ridgway.
Her body was found on Jovita Boulevard in Pierce County, Washington, on May 26th 1984.Ridgwayburied some of his victims in what he called ‘clusters’, mostly in wooded areas. He would return to the bodies to engage in acts of necrophilia with the corpses.
He later claimed that having sex with a corpse stopped him from killing someone else at that very moment. He was arrested in 2001 and sentenced to life in prison in 2003 after entering a plea bargain to plead guilty to 48 charges of murder.
Though, he claimed more murders and is linked to at least 71 in total. He remains one of the most notorious serial killers in the United States.
In Russia, on December 28th, 14-year-old Sergey Markov disappeared while returning home from work experience. His mutilated body was found near Novocherkassk on January 4th 1984.
He had raped and stabbed 70 times and his genitals had been amputated. He had been tortured and mutilated by Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, AKA: The Red Ripper.
Chikatilo was known to have chewed upon the testicles of his few male victims but maintained that he never ate them, he simply chewed and discarded.
Chikatilo was captured in 1990 and found guilty of 52 murders. He was sentenced to death and executed on February 16th 1994.
